The Source of the Helium Visible Lines in Eta Carinae
نویسندگان
چکیده
We assume that the helium-I lines emitted by the massive binary system η Carinae are formed in the acceleration zone of the less-massive secondary star. We calculate the Doppler shift of the lines as a function of orbital phase and of several parameters of the binary system. We find that a good fit is obtained if the helium lines are formed in the region where the secondary wind speed is vzone = 430 km s . The acceptable binary eccentricity is in the range 0.90 . e . 0.95, and the inclination angle (the angle between a line perpendicular to the orbital plane and the line of sight) is in the range 40 . i . 55. Lower values of e require higher values of i, and vice versa. The binary system is oriented such that the secondary star is in our direction (closer to us) during periastron passage. The orbital motion can account in part to the Doppler shift of the peak in X-ray emission. Early Chandra X-ray Observations of Eta Carinae
Sub-arcsecond resolution Chandra observations of η Car reveal a 40 × 70 ring or partial shell of X-ray emission surrounding an unresolved, bright, central source. The spectrum of the central source is strongly absorbed and can be fit with a high-temperature thermal continuum and emission lines. The surrounding shell is well outside the optical/IR bipolar nebula and is coincident with the Outer ...
متن کاملFermi Large Area Telescope Observation of a Gamma-ray Source at the Position of Eta Carinae
The Large Area Telescope (LAT) onboard the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope detected a γ-ray source that is spatially consistent with the location of Eta Carinae This source has been persistently bright since the beginning of the LAT survey observations (from 2008 August to 2009 July, the time interval considered here). The γ-ray signal is detected significantly throughout the LAT energy band (i...
متن کاملDetection of Gamma-ray Emission from the Eta-carinae Region
We present the results of extensive observations by the gamma-ray AGILE satellite of the Galactic region hosting the Carina nebula and the remarkable colliding wind binary Eta Carinae (η Car) during the period 2007 July – 2009 January. We detect a gamma-ray source (1AGL J1043-5931) consistent with the position of η Car. If 1AGL J1043-5931 is associated with the Car system our data provide the l...
متن کاملNitrogen and Oxygen Abundance Variations in the Outer Ejecta of Eta Carinae: Evidence for Recent Chemical Enrichment
We present optical spectra of the ionized ‘Outer Ejecta’ of η Carinae that reveal differences in chemical composition at various positions. In particular, young condensations just outside the dusty Homunculus Nebula show strong nitrogen lines and little or no oxygen — but farther away, nitrogen lines weaken and oxygen lines become stronger. The observed variations in the apparent N/O ratio may ...
متن کاملAccretion onto the Companion of Eta Carinae during the Spectroscopic Event. Iv. the Disappearance of Highly Ionized Lines
We show that the rapid and large decrease in the intensity of high-ionization emission lines from the η Carinae massive binary system can be explained by the accretion model. These emission lines are emitted by material in the nebula around the binary system that is being ionized by radiation from the hot secondary star. The emission lines suffer three months long deep fading every 5.54 year, a...
